Men's Sheds
Community 'men's sheds' bring people together to share skills, tools and banter. For many it can save them from life-shortening isolation. Men's Sheds support men who want to get together, share and learn new skills - all in the welcoming space of a workshop environment, known as a ‘Shed’.
Men’s Sheds are a new way for men to pursue their interests, develop new ones, belong to a unique group, feel useful, fulfilled and have a sense of belonging. Locality Links can work in local communities to help promote the concept and to help form and support local ‘action groups’ which can lead to sheds being created.
Men’s Sheds welcome everyone who has time on their hands, whether that’s due to unemployment, retirement, bereavement, disability or simply if someone is looking for ways of finding out about what’s going on within their community. We’re here to help get sheds up and running in local communities.
Activities include:
- woodworking and other 'make and do' activities
- inter-generational skills sharing
- socialising
We will support men’s sheds in finding premises, developing their constitution, help with funding ideas, health and safety as well as insurances.
Men's Sheds have also featured heavily in the national and local media including Newsnight, the BBC One's Show and regular stories in the national press. An article on the health benefits of Shedding has also recently appeared in the British Medical Journal.
